The workplace has become an interesting melting pot with 4 generations in the workforce at one time.  The Traditionalists, the Boomers, the X’ers, and the Millennials, all with different sets of values trying to work together. As with any young generation entering the workforce, challenges arise as Millennials try to fit their value system into a workplace built by generations with a different set of core values.

Pause for a moment and take a trip down memory lane to when you were a fledgling in the workplace. How did you respond to people of a different generation who made you conform to their value system, versus the ones who recognized the differences and leveraged your values for the success of the whole?  My guess is the latter was more likely the group that retained your loyalty, since we as humans are attracted to careers that support our values. So as a veterinary practice owner are you going to try and force this younger generation to conform to your set of values or are you going to tap into what drives this Millennial group to help drive the future success of your practice?

This generation craves engagement, technology, flexibility, and feedback.   They value work-life balance as well as doing meaningful work that benefits the greater good.  From high school assistants to shiny newly minted veterinary associates, they want to know their efforts are making a difference in the bigger picture.  The beauty of this is that it is a win, win for the business owner. How great is it that you now have a generation in your veterinary workplace whose driving value is to make a meaningful difference?  The veterinary profession is teaming with outlets for this. If you can facilitate this Millennial generation’s understanding of how their day to day performance relates to the bigger picture of your patients, clients, and fellow team mates, basically humanize the story of your business, you can unlock a powerful motivator for this generation.   Motivated people increase performance and performance can increase your bottom line (which may be one of the values that drives your generation).

The task may seem daunting at first to tap into this millennial mindset, but doing so can allow your business ‘to boldly go where no one has gone before.”   Added bonus: If you are tapping into understanding the Millennials in the workplace, you’re also learning to understand your next generation of clients.
