From our beginning in 2008, Live Oak Bank has recognized the need for more in-depth business training within the veterinary profession. We visit veterinary schools and host students onsite at our headquarters in Wilmington, NC, with the goal of shedding light on the financing process. Working closely with the student-run Veterinary Business Management Association (VBMA), we help provide quality business education to veterinary students interested in business topics—specifically how to acquire and successfully run their own practice.

The Veterinary Student Summer Program is designed to be a unique, hands-on learning experience with real-life scenarios for the students who are selected to participate. Over the course of the summer we host small group sessions for students to learn from the numerous business and industry experts at our Wilmington campus. The goal is to engage participants in a variety of activities—all intended to elevate their business acumen, to offer a better understanding of whether business ownership is right for them, and to teach tangible tactics for success.

Students have the opportunity to engage industry experts in thorough discussions related to financial topics and business ownership. This externship experience reveals the realities faced by veterinary practice owners, conveys what it takes to get financing in place and teaches strategies to operate a successful business. Fun and interactive, the program both challenges and encourages veterinary students who are considering practice ownership in their future.

Who

The program is open to all veterinary students in good standing with their universities and the Veterinary Business Management Association. No prior business experience is required, just a curious mind and can-do attitude.
